MAX A. SHAPIRO, MD, JOINS SAINT JOSEPH'S SPECIALTY CENTER AT COWLES CLINIC

ATLANTA – (January 5, 2009) – Max A. Shapiro, MD, Metro Atlanta Gastroenterology, has opened offices in the Saint Joseph's Specialty Center at Cowles Clinic and began seeing patients December 10th. The practices main offices are located on the Saint Joseph's Hospital campus in Atlanta, GA.

"We're very excited about expanding services to include gastroenterology at the Saint Joseph's Specialty Center," says Vickie Jenkins, director, physician services and community relations for Saint Joseph's East Georgia.

Dr. Shapiro specializes in colon cancer screening, GERD/Reflux disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, as well as liver disease, and performs upper endoscopies and colonoscopies.

Dr. Shapiro earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Brown University, Providence, RI and his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. He completed his internship and residency at Emory University and a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Georgetown University and Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Shapiro will be performing procedures at Saint Joseph's East Georgia, in addition to seeing patients at the Specialty Center. Saint Joseph's Specialty Center at Cowles Clinic currently offers vascular, orthopaedic, podiatry, gynecological and gastroenterology services and is located at 1000 Cowles Clinic Way, Oak Cottage C-300, Greensboro. A. Steven McIntosh, MD FACG, from East Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates, P.C. has opened a satellite office in the Aspen building at the Cowles Clinic. Dr. McIntosh roots are from South Georgia, McIntosh County but he currently resides in Snellville and part time in Reynolds Plantation. His practices main offices are in Conyers and Covington, Georgia.

Dr. McIntosh is a board certified gastroenterologist trained in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (EGD, colonoscopy and ERCP). He has over 10 years of experience in private practice and specializes in diseases of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, liver and pancreas. Active research studies include ablation of Barrett's Esophagus, GERD/ reflux disease, Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire. His medical degree came from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He completed his internship and residency in San Francisco and Oakland at the University California San Francisco affiliate Highland General Hospital in Oakland, California. Dr. McIntosh completed his gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of Arizona and Phoenix VA Medical Center.
