John M. McCurley, M.D. Appointed Medical Director, Director of Executive Health

Dr. Robert S. Cowles, founder of Cowles Clinic announced today the appointment of John M. McCurley, M.D.to the positions of Medical Director of Cowles Clinic and Director of Executive Health. Dr. McCurley will also serve as a staff physician in the newly opened practice, Cowles Clinic Internal Medicine.

“Dr. McCurley comes to our campus following a distinguished career as a naval physician who served the executive level of our government in Washington, D.C. He will now serve in multiple roles to manage the rapidly expanding healthcare services offered at Cowles Clinic, lead our international Executive Health Program and serve our community as a primary care physician in internal medicine. We feel very fortunate to have a physician with Dr. McCurley’s credentials and expertise," said Dr. Cowles.

Dr. McCurley attended medical school at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. His residency and internship in Internal Medicine were served at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. His notable accomplishments began even prior to medical school when he served for ten years as a Naval Submarine Officer, including service as a department head on a Trident submarine – the USS Georgia – and duties at the Naval Bureau of Personnel. In his final professional assignment before entering medical school, he served in The White House Military Office as the Director of the White House’s Presidential Emergency Complex.

Following completion of his residency training, Dr. McCurley was selected to serve as a staff physician in the Office of the Attending Physician to U.S. Congress where he provided care to members of the House of Representatives, Senate and Supreme Court. In this position, he traveled with multiple Congressional delegations for high level international meetings around the world supporting work in China, Taiwan, Russia, Mexico, Bosnia, Kosovo and Germany. Dr. McCurley was an integral part of the medical team assembled at the U.S. Capitol in response to the anthrax attack in October 2001.

Dr. McCurley spent nearly ten years as a staff physician at the naval hospital in Bethesda. In his last assignment as a Navy Physician, he served as Staff Internist and interim Medical Director at the Naval Health Clinic in Annapolis, MD. He remains an Assistant Professor of Medicine for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda where he spent three years as a principal investigator for clinical research in the pathophysiology of heart failure.

And, now with the launch of the Executive Health Program, our top tiered level of care is attracting international executives for annual health evaluations. Cowles Clinic is truly becoming a medical resource to the world," he said.

After completing 24 years of active duty with the United States Navy, Dr. McCurley recently retired as a full Commander. He is married to Maureen, his wife of 25 years. They have three children and live in the Lake Oconee area.

Dr. McCurley will serve as medical director over the rapidly growing, 13-acre medical campus. Currently, 38 physicians in 22 specialties with over 50 clinical and administrative staff deliver care for all ages. The campus facilities include the Cowles Clinic Imaging Center; Georgia Center for Total Cancer Care at Cowles Clinic; diagnostic Sleep Center; 2,000 square foot Physical Rehabilitation Facility and Cowles Clinic Laboratory Services.

New construction has begun on facilities that will house a permanent home for Cowles Clinic Pediatrics, Ophthalmology Center, Cowles Clinic Internal Medicine, Cowles Clinic Center for Urology, Executive Health, Fitness and Wellness Center and administration offices. Additional specialties will soon include Ophthalmology and Dermatology.
